ANGERS

ANGERS

Home of Henri Plantagenet and Eleanor of Aquitaine, the Angers Chateau imposes itself in the heart of the town giving a stunning view point of the gothic cathedral of Saint-Maurice and the Maine river bank.
The visit of the chateau ends with the discovery of the striking Apocalypse hanging, commissioned in 1373 by Louis the first, duke of Anjou, brother of the French king Charles V who lent him the manuscript which will inspire it.
It is based on the last book of the bible : the book of Saint John's Apocalypse (end of the 1st century manuscript) and stands on a 103m (140m at the beginning ) and 4,5m height, in 70 scenes, battle between angels and devils. It illustrates the historical, social and political context of the 14th century France plunged in the 100 year war (epidemics, famine).
The old city's charm stayed intact, through the small streets which are filled with many half-timbered houses.
