One of our hits: people say it's normal... it's a women's chateau!
Hard to resist the charmes of Chenonceau: the surrounding countryside, the Cher riverbanks and the chateau which spans the river.
Primarily (1234) this was a medieval fortress with its dungeon, only element that will remain in 1512, when the new owner destroyed the rest, to create a renaissance-style chateau.
Annexed in 1533 by Francis 1st, the chateau will become a royal estate where there will be organized hunting parties, celebrations and meetings.
Since 1551, Chenonceau has always been the property of women, the most famous are Diane of Poitier and Catherine of Medecis. It's during this period that the chateau interiors and gardens where embellished.
During your visit, do not miss the amazing kitchens and the suspended gallery over the Cher river which was used as a hospital for more than 2000 wounded, during First World War.
