This site included 18 underground concrete bunkers connected by trenches and was surrounded by two belts of barbed wire and minefields. It was the Command Post directing the fire of all the German gun batteries in the area.
After they had taken “Morris” strongpoint around noon, British soldiers progressed inland and suddenly were fired from the rear. As a new threat, “Hillman” was attacked around 01:00 p.m. The German defenders were well entrenched in their bunkers and resisted until the next day when the battery was taken by 1st Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment.
